Rocky Run’s Clubhouse Remodel Takes the View – and the Party – Topside
It was only a month ago that Dell Rapids received more than a foot of snow. But that spring snow didn’t last long, and the greens got green in a hurry at Rocky Run Golf Course on the west side of Dell Rapids.
A new clubhouse, restaurant, bar and pro shop also greeted the spring sun, and golfers are getting an entirely new look at Rocky Run.
Rocky Run is part of Sioux Falls-based Great Life Golf & Fitness. There are 23 courses in the Sioux Falls area where Great Life members can play, including Rocky Run.
The entire clubhouse in Dells has been flip-flopped, with the bar and restaurant now upstairs, connected to the pro shop. The new view from the bar rivals some of the best post-round views in the state. Facing north, patrons outside can view the vast course, with the view stretching far onto the horizon.
Steve Klock is the third-year golf professional at Rocky Run. He says although the course has been open only a month, the reaction to the new look has been positive.
“When people get done playing, they like to stick around and eat and drink. And spend more money,” he said with a chuckle. “People love it. Everything is new and fresh.”
Riley Schmidt is a lifelong Dell Rapids resident. He lives on the golf course and says he’s played many rounds through the years at Rocky Run. But now, there’s even a stronger tug to play.
It’s not a long commute for Schmidt to get to the course. Once he’s done with his 18 holes, it’s a straight shot to the updated clubhouse that overlooks the new putting green, and the black tees for the No. 1 hole. Off to the north, holes 9 and 10 are close by.
“Oh, man, it’s just unbelievable,” Schmidt said of the new facilities. “The open concept just helps out so much. They’ve got bigger windows up there. You just feel like you can see more of the golf course. It makes me want to get outside and get over there more often.”

The downstairs is still functional, and that has a new look, too. The lower level seats about 100 and is open for events, wedding rehearsals and meetings. It also has a Champions room that features photos of past champions at Rocky Run.
But the real attraction is upstairs with the new bar, restaurant and pro shop.
“Players want to be somewhere that’s clean and fresh, that smells good and looks good,” Klock said. “It’s a small thing, but not being in the basement makes a difference. Being in the sun is a huge thing. People say it all the time, how they like it up here and they see the sun. It’s a whole new experience. It’s much more friendly and inviting.”
It’s still early, but the return has been positive. Unlike in years past, Klock said they’ve had many nights where golfers will hang out in the bar until midnight following a round.
“It’s been really busy, and we expect it to stay that way,” Klock said. “People are having fun. They get done with their rounds, and they’re sticking around.”
Schmidt says the updates not only add to the charm of the golf course, but also bring another entertainment option to Dell Rapids.
“There’s really not a place in town where you can have a nice sit-down meal with a view like that,” Schmidt said. “Those renovations were needed. The basement was kind of old, and the whole thing needed a new look. I’m so happy they did it.”
