GAME ON – SYMETRA TOUR RETURNS TO SIOUX FALLS

GAME ON – SYMETRA TOUR RETURNS TO SIOUX FALLS

It’s tee time in Sioux Falls – especially if you’re a lady golfer on the Symetra Tour – The Road to the LPGA. For the second year in a row the Tour will bring its slate of 144 talented women to Willow Run Golf Course to compete for a shot at a purse of $210,000 – with the winner taking home $31,500 – and points in the Volvik Race for the Card toward a coveted spot on the pro tour.

The Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge is one of only four 72-hole events on the tour and one of only 23 cities to host the tour. According to the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB), Sioux Falls will realize more than $3 million in economic impact, depending on overall attendance.

The tournament will begin on September 1 with the winner clinching the title on September 4. It will be hosted once again by GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness Club and the Sioux Falls CVB.

ALL GOLF. ALL WEEK.

Golfers from across the region can enjoy a spectacular view of the fairway action and the LPGA hopefuls, and enjoy a few special events throughout the week of the tour including:

• Free Kids Clinic with Mike Malaska – Tuesday, August 30, Willow Run
• Dan Boever, World Long Drive Champion – Tuesday, August 30, Willow Run Driving Range
• Feherty Live! – Thursday, September 1, Washington Pavilion

To add to the excitement, one ambitious young golfer will have the opportunity to earn a spot in the GreatLIFE Challenge at an open qualifier to be held at Willow Run on August 26. The qualifier is open to all South Dakota female residents and any female college student that attends an accredited in-state college or university. Entries close Monday, August 22. Contact Jason Sudenga, GreatLIFE Director of Golf at 605-940-7344.

The second exemption for the tournament will be Mariah Stackhouse, a recent Stanford grad that has been turning heads on the fairway since she exhibited a talent for the game at age four. She’s the first African American woman to earn a spot in the field at the U.S. Open.

Last year’s winner, Caroline Westrup, finished the tournament with a 12-under 272 total, followed Sweden’s Dani Holmqvist in second place and Italy’s Giulia Molinaro who finished third.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES!

To ensure the success of this weeklong event, sponsors are looking for local volunteers to act as host families and to provide other services throughout the tournament. To learn more about these and other volunteer opportunities or to sign up, visit www.greatlifechallenge.com.

Feherty Live! GreatLIFE Members Receive Exclusive Early-Bird Access

The 2nd Annual Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge is just a month away, and we’re excited to bring great golf and great entertainment to Sioux Falls, including a comedic show featuring one of the funniest professional golf insiders, David Feherty, to take the Washington Pavilion stage.

Feherty Live!
Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m.
Washington Pavilion Mary W. Sommervold Hall

We want all GreatLIFE members to have an opportunity to see Feherty when he visits Sioux Falls as part of the GreatLIFE Challenge lineup, so we’re offering discount pricing and exclusive early-bird ticketing before tickets go on sale to the general public.

  • Tickets are available to members on August 4 using the promo code GREATLIFE.
  • $10 Off tickets – You pay only $20!

Once described as “a cross between Oprah Winfrey and Johnny Carson”, David Feherty made a name for himself through his self-titled Golf Channel talk show – and as one of the most irrepressible personalities in golf. He received an Emmy nomination in 2014, and joined NBC Sports Group and NBCUniversal exclusively in 2015. He is now a familiar on-course and tower analyst since retiring from professional golf in 1996.

His sharp wit and clever personality have made Feherty a viewer favorite and an audience pleaser. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the “wicked” humor of Feherty live at the Washington Pavilion.

Thank you for supporting GreatLIFE and year two of the GreatLIFE Challenge.

Frost Delay Ahead!

What does frost mean for golf courses?

It’s that time of year again and frost is in the forecast for this weekend.

What can we do to help our golf courses and Superintendents?

The best medicine is for all to understand the purpose of a frost delay and in turn gain a greater appreciation for the golf course.

Foot traffic on the golf course causes substantial damage to frozen greens.

WHAT DOES FROST MEAN FOR THE GOLF COURSES?
Frost is basically frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass, making it hard and brittle. Frost can only survive at temperatures of 32º Fahrenheit and below. This does not mean air temperature must be below 32º for frost to form. Sometimes frost can form even when the air temperature is in the upper 30’s.

A grass blade is actually 90 percent water, therefore it also freezes. Walking on frost covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally. When the membrane is broken, much like an egg, it cannot be put back together.

A short frost delay can help preserve the quality of the golf course and prevent costly repairs.

DELAYED IMPACT
Golfers who ignore frost delays will not see immediate damage. The proof
generally comes 48-72 hours later as the grass may turn purple or black, eventually fading to a very light brown. The result is a thinning of the putting surface and a weakening of the plant, sometimes even death of the plant. The greens in turn become more susceptible to disease and weeds. Additionally, weaker grass, even if it doesn’t die, may be more susceptible to disease and weed formation in the future.

CLUBHOUSE HOURS / FROST DELAY POLICY
At all GreatLIFE facilities, golfers must check-in at the pro shop before beginning play. Golfers are permitted to play on the golf course only after the clubhouse opens and they have checked in. If there is a frost delay, the golf course staff will determine when play may begin.

PLAY ON THE COURSE BEFORE THE CLUBHOUSE OPENS IS NOT PERMITTED!

OCTOBER HOURS – *Note: If there is frost in the forecast, the golf courses will not open until 9:00 am.

Willow Run – 8:00 am – Sunset
Bakker Crossing – 8:00 am – Sunset
Central Valley – 8:00 am – Sunset
Rocky Run – 8:00 am – Sunset
Worthington – 8:00 am – Sunset

If ever in doubt, give the course a phone call before heading out to play to see if tee-times have been pushed back due to frost. Even the use of practice facilities (putting green and driving range ) is disallowed during a frost delay.

Your help in keeping the golf courses in the best possible conditions is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your understanding.
